What we work on

A sterndrive (also called an I/O or inboard/outboard) has an engine inside the boat and a drive unit bolted to the transom. Most problems come from the parts where those two meet, or from the drive itself.

Sterndrive jobs we do:

  • Bellows. The rubber boots on the transom assembly that keep water out of the boat and away from the U-joints and gimbal bearing.
  • Shift cables. Hard shifting, slipping out of gear, or a lever that doesn't feel right.
  • Impellers and water pumps. The raw-water impeller moves cooling water through the engine. A worn one is a common cause of overheating.
  • Lower unit gear oil. Checking and changing the oil in the drive, and looking at what comes out.
  • Lower unit rebuilds. When the gears, bearings, or seals inside the drive are worn out.
  • Props. Removing, replacing, and checking props for damage.
  • Trim. Trim wiring, switches, and pumps. See our boat electrical repair page for more.

We've worked on MerCruiser and Volvo Penta engines, and on boats from builders like Bayliner and Chaparral. If you're not sure whether we work on your drive, call with the make and model.

Signs your sterndrive needs attention

  • Milky or water-colored gear oil. Water is getting past a seal inside the drive.
  • Hard shifting or a clunk when shifting. Often a shift cable, sometimes something inside the drive.
  • Overheating or a weak stream from the tell-tale. Often the impeller or water pump.
  • Water in the bilge near the transom. A bellows or transom seal may be leaking.
  • Grinding or whining from the drive. Could be U-joints, bearings, or gears.

If you're seeing any of these, it's cheaper to deal with it early. A leaking bellows is a smaller job than the damage it can lead to.

How a mobile sterndrive repair works

  1. You call and tell us the boat, the engine, and what's going on.
  2. We schedule a time and come to where the boat is.
  3. We look at it and give you a quote before starting work.
  4. We do the repair and tell you what we found.

If the boat needs to move and you don't have a way to tow it, we offer boat pickup and delivery.

Sterndrives and winterization

Sterndrives are one of the engine types we winterize, along with inboards, outboards, and jet skis. Winterization runs antifreeze through the cooling system, fogs the cylinders, and adds fuel stabilizer. It's a good time to change the gear oil and look over the bellows too, so small problems don't sit all winter.

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair MerCruiser sterndrives in Spokane?

Yes. MerCruiser is one of the brands we work on, and we've also worked on Volvo Penta sterndrives. We do the work at your home, storage lot, or marina.

How much does sterndrive repair cost?

Repairs are a $129 trip fee plus $200 an hour for labor, plus tax. We'll give you a quote before we start so you know the number first.

How do I know if my bellows need replacing?

Cracked or dried-out rubber, water in the bilge near the transom, or a grinding U-joint can all point to the bellows. If the boat is older and the bellows have never been done, it's worth having them checked.

Why is my gear oil milky?

Milky or watery gear oil usually means water is getting into the drive past a seal. It should be looked at before the boat goes back in the water, because water in the drive can damage the gears and bearings.

Can you replace a shift cable at my house?

Yes. Shift cable work is one of the sterndrive jobs we do on site. If shifting is hard or the drive slips out of gear, call and describe what it's doing.

Why is my sterndrive overheating?

A worn raw-water impeller or water pump is a common cause, especially if it hasn't been replaced in a few seasons. A blocked water intake can do it too. We can check both on a repair visit.
