Boat Electrical Repair in Spokane

If your boat won't start, won't trim, or has gauges and switches acting up, Spokane Boat Repair will come to it and track down the problem. We do ignition, no-start, trim, and general electrical diagnostics at your home, storage lot, or marina, at a $129 trip fee plus $200 an hour, plus tax.

Electrical problems on boats are usually a bad connection, a failed part, or corrosion somewhere you can't easily see. Finding which one is the job.

Boat won't start

No-starts are especially common in spring, after a boat has sat all winter. Some of the usual causes:

  • Battery. Dead, weak, or not holding a charge after sitting all winter.
  • Connections. Loose or corroded battery cables, grounds, or terminals.
  • Kill switch lanyard. Not clipped in, or a failed switch. Worth checking first.
  • Starter or starter solenoid. Clicking but not cranking.
  • Ignition. The engine cranks but won't fire.
  • Neutral safety switch. The engine won't crank unless the control is fully in neutral.

Not every no-start is electrical. Fuel problems can look similar, especially after winter storage, and we check fuel systems and fuel pumps too. We'll figure out which one it is.

Trim and tilt problems

Power trim problems usually fall into one of three places: the switch, the wiring, or the pump.

  • Trim doesn't move at all. Could be the switch, a relay, a blown fuse, wiring, or the pump motor.
  • Trims one direction but not the other. Often a switch or relay.
  • Pump runs but nothing moves. Could be low fluid or a pump problem.
  • Trim drifts down on its own. Often a hydraulic issue in the trim system.

We work on trim wiring, switches, and pumps on outboards and sterndrives.

Other electrical work

  • Gauges that read wrong or don't work
  • Switches and switch panels
  • Wiring faults and shorts
  • Charging problems
  • Fish finder and electronics power wiring (see fish finder installation)

If your problem isn't on this list, call and describe it. If it's not work we do, we'll tell you.

How we diagnose it

  1. You call and describe what the boat is doing, or not doing.
  2. We come to the boat.
  3. We test from the simple things forward: battery, connections, fuses, switches, then components.
  4. We tell you what we found and give you a quote before doing the repair.

Diagnosing electrical problems is often the biggest part of the job. Once the fault is found, the fix itself is frequently quick.

Prevent the spring no-start

A lot of spring no-starts start in the fall. A boat winterized with fuel stabilizer and fogged cylinders is easier to bring back. Our winterization runs antifreeze through the cooling system, fogs the cylinders, and adds fuel stabilizer, and spring dewinterization is $270 plus tax per engine.

See our winterization page.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my boat start?

The most common causes are a weak or dead battery, loose or corroded connections, the kill switch lanyard, the starter, or the control not being fully in neutral. Fuel problems can look like electrical ones too, especially after winter. We'll test and find which it is.

My boat clicks but won't crank. What's wrong?

A click with no crank usually points to a weak battery, a bad connection, or the starter or starter solenoid. Check that the battery is charged and the cables are tight first. If that's not it, it needs to be tested.

Why won't my boat trim up or down?

It's usually the switch, a relay or fuse, the wiring, or the trim pump. If the pump runs but the engine doesn't move, it may be low on fluid or have a pump problem. We diagnose and repair trim wiring, switches, and pumps.

Can you fix boat electrical problems at my house?

Yes. We're fully mobile and do electrical diagnostics and repairs at your home, storage lot, or marina. There's no need to trailer the boat anywhere.

How much does boat electrical repair cost?

Electrical work is billed at a $129 trip fee plus $200 an hour including diagnosis, plus tax. We'll give you a quote before we start the repair.

Do you work on jet ski electrical problems?

Yes. We work on Sea-Doo, Yamaha WaveRunner, and Kawasaki personal watercraft along with boats. Call with the make, model, and what it's doing.
