Pre-Purchase Boat Inspection in Spokane

Before you buy a used boat, Spokane Boat Repair can come out and look it over mechanically, wherever the boat is sitting. This is a mechanic's inspection of the engine, drive, electrical, and trailer. The inspection is $420 plus tax. It is not a marine survey.

That difference matters, so we'll explain it plainly below. If you need a survey for a lender or insurer, you'll need a marine surveyor. If you want to know whether the engine and drive are in the shape the seller says they are, that's what we do.

Mechanical inspection vs. marine survey

A mechanical inspection is a working mechanic looking at the parts that make the boat run: engine, drive or lower unit, cooling, fuel, ignition, electrical, steering, controls, and trailer. The goal is to find problems that would cost you money after you buy.

A marine survey is done by a marine surveyor. It usually covers the whole vessel, including the hull and structure, and some lenders and insurers ask for one before they'll finance or cover a boat.

We do the first one. We don't do the second, and we won't call our inspection a survey. If your lender or insurer needs a survey, ask them what they require and hire a surveyor for that part.

Plenty of buyers get a mechanical inspection by itself, especially on smaller or older boats, because the engine and drive are where the big repair bills usually come from.

What we look at

The $420 inspection is a full inspection. It covers everything on this list:

  • Engine. Cold start, idle, running condition, visible leaks, oil condition
  • Cooling system. Impeller and water pump condition, tell-tale flow
  • Lower unit or sterndrive. Gear oil condition (milky oil means water intrusion), bellows, shift function
  • Fuel system. Visible condition of lines, filters, fuel pump
  • Ignition and electrical. Starting, charging, gauges, switches, lights
  • Trim and tilt. Wiring, switches, pump
  • Steering and controls. Shift and throttle cables
  • Props. Damage and wear
  • Trailer. Lights, bunks, bearings

What you get

We'll go over what we found: what's in good shape, what's normal wear for a boat that age, and what needs work.

What it costs

A pre-purchase inspection is $420 plus tax. That covers the full inspection, everything listed above. There's no trip fee on inspections.

If you buy the boat and want us to fix what we found, repairs are a $129 trip fee plus $200 an hour for labor, plus tax. See the full price list.

How it works

  1. You find a boat and agree with the seller on a time for an inspection.
  2. You call us with the boat, engine, year, and where it's located.
  3. We meet at the boat: the seller's driveway, a storage lot, or a marina.
  4. We inspect it and go over what we found.

The seller needs to be OK with it, and the boat needs to be somewhere we can get to it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pre-purchase inspection the same as a marine survey?

No. Ours is a mechanical inspection done by a mechanic, focused on the engine, drive, electrical, and trailer. A marine survey is done by a marine surveyor and usually covers the whole vessel. If a lender or insurer requires a survey, you'll need a surveyor.

How much does a pre-purchase boat inspection cost?

$420 plus tax. That covers the full inspection: engine, cooling, lower unit or sterndrive, fuel, ignition and electrical, trim, controls, props, and the trailer. There's no trip fee on inspections.

Do you come to where the boat is?

Yes. We're fully mobile. We'll meet you at the seller's home, a storage lot, or a marina, as long as the seller agrees and we can get to the boat.

What do you check on a used boat inspection?

We look at the parts that make the boat run and the parts that cost the most to fix: engine, cooling, lower unit or sterndrive, fuel, ignition and electrical, trim, controls, props, and the trailer. We'll tell you what's in good shape and what needs work.

Do I need an inspection if the seller says the boat runs fine?

A boat can start and idle in the driveway and still have milky gear oil, a worn impeller, or a leaking bellows. Those are the kinds of things an inspection turns up before they become your problem.

Can you inspect a boat in Coeur d'Alene or Post Falls?

Yes. We cover Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, Hayden, and Rathdrum on the Idaho side, plus Spokane and the surrounding area. Call (509) 408-3075 with the boat's location.

Can you fix what you find after I buy the boat?

Yes. Everything we'd flag on an inspection is work we do, from impellers and bellows to electrical and trailer repairs. Repairs are a $129 trip fee plus $200 an hour, plus tax, and we'll quote before we start.
