Boat 100-Hour and Annual Service in Spokane

Spokane Boat Repair does 100-hour and annual boat service at your home, storage lot, or marina. That means an oil and filter change, lower unit gear oil, a look at the impeller and water pump, and a check of the fuel and ignition systems, done wherever the boat is parked.

Most engine makers call for a service at 100 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. Your owner's manual has the exact schedule for your engine.

What a 100-hour service is

A 100-hour service is the routine maintenance interval most outboard, sterndrive, and inboard manufacturers list for their engines. It's the boat version of a scheduled car service: fresh fluids, wear parts checked or replaced, and a look over the systems that tend to cause trouble.

If you don't put 100 hours on the boat in a season, the once-a-year interval still applies. Oil breaks down with time as well as use, and rubber parts like impellers age whether the boat runs or not.

What a 100-hour service covers

The exact list depends on your engine and its manual. A typical 100-hour or annual service covers:

  • Engine oil and filter change
  • Lower unit or sterndrive gear oil change. We look at the old oil for water or metal.
  • Impeller and water pump. Inspect, and replace if worn or due.
  • Fuel system. Check lines, filters, and fuel pump.
  • Ignition and electrical. Check starting, charging, and connections.
  • Trim. Check trim operation and wiring.
  • Props. Inspect for damage.
  • Sterndrives: check bellows and shift cable.

We'll confirm what's included for your engine when we quote the job. When we're done, we'll tell you what we did and anything we noticed that should be dealt with soon.

Pairing it with winterization

A lot of boat owners handle the annual oil change in the fall. When we winterize, we run antifreeze through the cooling system, fog the cylinders, and add fuel stabilizer, and you can add an oil and filter change for $120 plus tax per engine. That way the engine sits on clean oil all winter instead of the oil you ran all summer.

If your boat is due for its 100-hour or annual service, fall is a good time to do the rest of it too, since the boat is coming out of the water anyway.

More on the boat winterization page.

Why do it on schedule

Skipping a service interval rarely causes a problem that same week. It shows up later as an overheating engine from a worn impeller, a drive full of water from a seal nobody checked, or a no-start from corroded connections.

Regular service is also the cheapest time to catch small problems. A cracked bellows found during a service is a much smaller job than water in the gimbal bearing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 100-hour boat service?

It's the routine maintenance interval most engine manufacturers list: every 100 hours of running time or once a year, whichever comes first. It covers fresh oil and filter, lower unit gear oil, and checks of the impeller, fuel, ignition, and electrical systems. Your owner's manual has the exact list for your engine.

Do I need a 100-hour service if I didn't use the boat much?

Usually yes, because most manufacturers also list a once-a-year interval. Oil breaks down with time, and rubber parts like impellers age even when the boat sits. Check your owner's manual for your engine's schedule.

Can you do a boat oil change at my house?

Yes. We're fully mobile and do oil changes at your home, storage lot, or marina. If you're winterizing, you can add an oil and filter change for $120 plus tax per engine.

How much does a 100-hour service cost?

It depends on the engine and what's due. Call (509) 408-3075 with your engine make, model, and hours, and we'll give you a quote before we start.

How often should I replace my boat's impeller?

Check your owner's manual, since it varies by engine. We look at the impeller on every service and will tell you if it's worn. A worn impeller is one of the most common causes of overheating.

Should I service my boat in the fall or spring?

Either works, but fall has an advantage. Changing the oil before winter means the engine sits on clean oil for months. You can combine it with winterization in one visit.
